2016 Phoenix Gold Cup Contenders
The 2015 Phoenix Gold Cup featured a competitive field of nine including the classy eight year-old gelding, Absolutely Cool, who won the race in 2014 and finished second back-to-back years in 2012 and 2013. Not that bettors gave the ageless wonder a serious chance. Entering the Phoenix Gold Cup on a six-race losing streak and appearing to have his best days behind him. Absolutely Cool lagged far off the early pace and remained dead last turning for home. But with blistering fractions up front, the speed began to fade, and Absolutely Cool kicked into gear while making a wide move under jockey Rocco Bowen to score by a half length at the wire, out-closing the game Valiant Flame.
